Sportanlage Waldstrasse "Stadion der Hüttenwerker", Eisenhüttenstadt (FC Eisenhüttenstadt, formerly SG Schönfliess / BSG Stahl Fürstenberg / BSG Stahl Stalinstadt / BSG Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt / Eisenhüttenstadter FC Stahl)

East Germany (former GDR / DDR), state: Brandenburg

May 2022 / no match visited

Note: Originally built in the late 1920s as home soil for a small local club, Sportgemeinschaft (SG) Schönfliess, the ground at Waldstrasse was assigned to the newly founded BSG (Betriebssportgemeinschaft) Stahl Fürstenberg in 1950 - and at that time the first stands, paid for by Stahlwerk Fürstenwerk, were added at the now renamed 'Stadion der Hüttenwerker'. Fürstenberg being the location for the GDR's new model industrial town project Stalinstadt, the club was renamed BSG Stahl Stalinstadt in the year of the Soviet dictator's passing (1953). As Stalin fell from grace in the second half of the 1950s, the town was renamed Eisenhüttenstadt in 1961 - and the football club followed suit, thus becoming BSG Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt. In 1969, the club won promotion to GDR's highest division, the Oberliga, for the first time; even though this spell in the top flight lasted for one season only, the ground was extended to a capacity of 10,000. In the two last seasons of East Germany having its own independent football pyramid (1989-91), the club (renamed Eisenhüttenstadter FC Stahl in 1990) played in the Oberliga again - even qualifying for the Cup Winners Cup in 1991, but losing in the first round against Galatasaray. After the GDR's absorption into the FRG, EFC Stahl descended into non-league obscurity. In 2016, a merger was concluded with two other local clubs, SG Aufbau Eisenhüttenstadt and 1. FC Fürstenberg, resulting in the foundation of FC Eisenhüttenstadt. First team football takes place at Sportanlage Waldstrasse, with the old stadium still largely having the look it was given in the late 1960s.
